Diabetes should not stop you from traveling but careful planning is required in order to assure a safe and enjoyable trip. Sometimes things may get a little complicated when a diabetic is on the road. Here are few tips which will enable you to enjoy your trip like any other regular traveler.
- Plan 2-3 months in advance, about the trip. So as to avoid last minute tensions, worries and pressure. Planning in advance will enable you to get everything you require for the trip.
- If you are traveling through a travel agent. Inquire beforehand if they have a special package for a diabetic. This is necessary as this will ensure you meals that conform to the needs of a diabetic. Also other requirements may be provided.
- When packing, ensure that you place your diabetes supplies and medications in different bags in case your bag is stolen or lost.
- Insulin will lose its strength if stored in extreme temperatures, such as the glove compartment of the car. Avoid keeping insulin in un-pressurized environment to be on the safer side.
- When traveling by plane keep your medications and diabetes supply in your carry on luggage. Have them with you all the time. Insulin should not be exposed in x-ray.
- Check your blood sugar level regularly.
- Keep a note of your medication schedules especially if you are crossing time zones. Before going to sleep, inform a flight attendant to wake you up for your medication.
- Holiday vacation on a cruise can mean buffet meals which are very tempting. Control your cravings and only eat the amount prescribed to you.
- While traveling by car, make sure that you keep check on your blood sugar level every 4 hours during the trip.
- Make frequent stops to exercise your legs so as to improve your blood circulation.
Whatever the conditions always make sure you check your blood pressure regularly and take your medicines on time.This will ensure you have a problem free trip.
