If you are a diabetic it is very essential that you take care of your feet. Diabetes in a major way affects the peripheral nerves which extend into the feet. Diabetes results in a condition called neuropathy which causes you to loose the ability to feel any pain in the feet. You will not even be aware as to when a small cut will turn out into a big sore.
As a diabetic it is important to keep your feet clean and free of cuts, bruises or sores that may become infected. This can result in foot or leg amputation.
Make sure to check your feet everyday. This is very essential as reduced blood flow will make it difficult for the infections to heal.
Tips for Foot care
- Wash your feet every day with warm (not hot) soapy water. Rinse well and pat (don’t rub) dry. Use a light lotion or petroleum jelly on dry areas, but not between your toes.
- Engage in active exercises for 30 minutes everyday. Consult your doctor for the type of activity you should engage in.
- Check your blood glucose every day and keep a record of it.
- Check your feet every day for cuts, blisters, sores, swelling, redness, or sore toenails.
- Always wear shoes and socks, or slippers. Avoid wearing tight shoes; avoid any chance of injuring your feet.
- Dry feet can crack and cause pressure sores, be sure to keep dry feet moisturized by applying some lotion.
- Cut your nails monthly, be careful and do not injure yourself.
If you see something that concerns you, make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as possible. Your feet are an important part of your body. They are means which transport you from one place to another.
So keep a look out for anything unusual.
