Children with Diabetes Don’t Get Enough Support in Schools

Diabetic children really suffer a tough time to manage their diabetic condition and blood glucose levels in school hours due to lack of support from their school authorities. This increases their risk of complications of diabetes. Government and schools should take immediate action to solve this problem.

A survey conducted by Diabetes UK, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, INPUT and UK Children with Diabetes Advocacy Group for World Diabetic Day, 2007, says that schools are failing to give diabetic children the required support they need during school hours.

Douglas Smallwood, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK, says: “This research confirms what too many parents have been telling us – that children with diabetes get a raw deal at school. Every aspect of school life is important, whether its access to the support needed to manage a child’s diabetes and protect their long-term health, or crucial social elements like sports and trips.”

The survey aims at bringing a difference to the lives of diabetic children. It calls on the schools, Local Education Authorities and Government to make and implement effective policies to help diabetic children during school hours.

It’s really the need of the hour to take the necessary effective steps to solve this dangerous problem. Diabetes in children is not a new thing. Government as well as schools should be aware of this problem and should take immediate steps for effective solution, which can save millions children.
