Type 2 diabetes has been increasingly becoming a common health condition in children in U.S and all over the world giving special challenges to both parents and children. It is important for both parents and children to know what increases a child’s risk of type 2 diabetes to prevent before it starts.
Here are the Risk Factors of Type 2 Diabetes in Children
Overweight
It is reported that 85% of children diagnosed with type-2 diabetes are overweight. Obesity or overweight in children is associated with consumption of lots of fast food and sedentary lifestyles.
No exercise
No exercise-no playing is another major cause of type 2 diabetes in children. They spend most of their time in watching television after school hours. In this case parents should encourage their children to play and exercise and make them understand their importance.
Genetics:
Children with a family history are more likely to develop diabetes.
Medical Conditions that can Increase a Child’s Risk of Type 2 Diabetes include:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Excess fat deposit in the liver
- Sleep apnea
- Early age smoking
Other Factors that Increase a Child’s Risk of Type 2 Diabetes include:
- Sex: Girls are at greater risk of developing the condition than boys
- Gestational Diabetes: Children’s’ mothers who suffer from gestational diabetes during pregnancy are at a greater risk of developing the condition.
- Race: Native American, African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic and Pacific Islander are at a greater risk of type 2 diabetes. It is not clear why children belong to these races are at greater risk.
