Artificial sweeteners are sugar substitutes or chemicals that give the sweetness of sugar without calories. They are sweeter than sugar. So it takes very small amount of artificial sweeteners to create the effect of real sugar.
Foods made with artificial sweeteners contain very lower calories that foods made with sugars. These foods are especially used by diabetics to reduce blood sugar levels and maintaining weight gain.
It is reported that artificial sweeteners don’t affect blood sugar levels because of their lower calories. They are called as free foods as they are nor considered as carbohydrates neither as fats.
It is important to know that some foods such as sugar free yogurt made up artificial sweeteners can affect your sugar levels as they contain other proteins and carbohydrates that rise blood sugar levels.
So if you are a diabetic, check up with your doctor and take advice on which artificial sweeteners are suitable for your health.
Following are the artificial sweeteners approved by American Diabetes Association:
- Saccharin (Sweet’N Low)
- Acesulfame potassium (Sunett)
- Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal)
- Sucralose (Splenda)
