Diabetes is definitely a dreaded disease. There is no cure for it. The patient has to come to terms and learn to live with. It is very difficult indeed. Regular insulin intake and dietary restrictions can make a patient find it difficult to cope up with it. How does a patient react to his or her disease initially, when diagnosed?
How Does a Patient React Initially to Diabetes?
- The patient is overwhelmed about the diagnosis
- Feels uncertain about the future. How his or her body would react to the disease? This is the question that crops up in his or her mind
- The question of family adjustment would arise. Whether the family would understand their disease and cooperate with the dietary restrictions
- Some suffer from shock
- Some patients feel angry
- Parents of a diabetic child feel guilty
- Teenagers behave in a rebellious manner. Refuse to accept the condition
- Lot of enquiries are made regarding the effect of the disease on the body system
- Some deny it as they do not experience initial symptoms
- A sense of helplessness is felt by some patients
- Some experience anxiety
- Fear of deviating from normal diet and activities
- Concern about employment
- Health insurance issues may have to be taken care of
- Reassurance is sought from the physician
Diabetes is definitely not something that one can easily accept. A health problem, which has no cure can be difficult to live with. Also the regular insulin intake requires a lot of patience on the part of the patient.
