Diabetics need a balanced normal diet, with all food groups and plenty of fruits and vegetables. They should avoid excess fat and protein. They do not normally need any extra supplements, especially if they are taking plenty of brightly colour veggies like carrots, broccoli, spinach, yellow petha, etc, which have high amounts of anti-oxidants. Here’s a right guide to the fruits and veggies diabetics can eat without fear.
Current recommendations for diabetics are to take plenty of fruits and vegetables, as naturally occurring fruit sugar (fructose) is more slowly absorbed than sucrose, and raises the blood glucose to a lesser extent. As far as possible, try to take them unpeeled, to maintain a high fiber content. Very sweet fruits (mango, banana, chikoo, etc) can be taken in small portions, along with a meal to reduce the spike in blood glucose.
For people with diabetes – eating too many starchy vegetables or too much of one starchy vegetable, or more starchy vegetables than usual, may raise blood glucose levels more than is desirable. Starchy vegetables such as potato, kumara, corn, yams, taro, breadfruit and cassava are high in carbohydrate. Non-starchy vegetables contain very little carbohydrate, eg. broccoli, peas, green beans, lettuce, puha, watercress, kamo kamo, parengo.
High fiber diet is recommended for people suffering from diabetes. Fiber is digested very slowly and as a result blood sugar level rises very slowly. A high-fiber diet that includes fiber rich fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, sweet potatoes, oatmeal, zucchini, oranges and raisin helps reduce insulin dosage by 25 %.

Monkeybutt: Diabetes can’t always be prevented. There is family history that has to be taken into account. If someone is active with a healthy diet and weight, they reduce their risk. In some cases, such as mine, it can only be prolonged. Family history dictated it was more of a matter of “when” than “if”

I was hoping for a simple list of veggies that are good and veggies that should be avoided. Why do these sites have to make everything so complex/complicated? It wastes people’s time that need information.
Example: Isn’t it nice that the self-important poofdas on this site let you know about kumara, corn, yams, taro, breadfruit and cassava, puha, watercress, kamo kamo and parengo. But what about REAL veggies that we actually EAT like Cucumbers? What about Celery? Would it kill them to include brussel sprouts? avacado? This yuppie site is a waste of time and time is INFO to those of us who need this info to save our lives. Don’t have time for their foo-foo BS.
