A good control of Diabetes Type 2 is essential in order to avoid complications. A person with sufficient levels of literacy can control this type of Diabetes better.
The study conducted by researchers at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center involved 408 people who were suffering from Type 2 Diabetes. The researchers observed that 36% of the participants had low levels of health literacy and suffered from diabetic retinopathy. Such a condition can cause blindness. On the other hand 19% of the participants who had good levels of health literacy suffered from diabetic retinopathy. Furthermore, 20% of the participants with less health literacy levels had good control of their blood sugar levels. On the other hand, 33% of the people with sufficient health literacy had good control of blood sugar levels.
The study findings have been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association( Vol: 288-pages 475-482, Jul 24th, 2002.)
A strict adherence to a treatment regimen was essential to control Diabetes. To attain this sufficient health literacy levels was essential.
