Women with high blood pressure (BP) or increasing blood pressure levels are at a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes than women with low blood pressure. And this link is independent of excess or over weight and other risk factors that cause diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, reports an American study.
The researchers conducted a ten year follow up study on 38,172 women who were free of diabetes or heart diseases at the beginning of the study in 1993.
After 10 years the study found that 1,672 women developed type 2 diabetes and most of them had high.
After considering all the factors such as ethnicity, genetic, age, alcohol use, smoking, exercise and body weight the researchers found that women with high blood pressure had three fold increased risk of developing diabetes than women with optimal blood pressure.
This study provides clear evidence that blood pressure and progression in blood pressure levels are linked with increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
