Bitter Gourd or Bitter Melon is a vegetable/fruit which contains Charantin and Polypeptide P.These compounds are effective in fighting diabetes.This article tries to gain further insight.

Role of Charantin in Crabbing Mechanism of Bitter Gourd:
- Bitter Gourd has the ability of reducing the glucose content in the blood.
- Technically it is called the hypoglucemic ability.
- It contains a compound called Charantin.
- There was 42% reduction in the glucose production,when a dose of 50mg/kg of Charatin was given to rabbits.
- This compound stimulates the Beta cells of the pancreas to release Insulin.
- It also blocks the production of glucose keeping its level in check.
Role of Polypeptide P in crabbing Mechanism of Bitter Gourd:
- Bitter Gourd can be a natural insulin replacement agent.
- It contains the compound Polypeptide P which works effectively in Type-1 dibetic patients.
- The peak effect of this insulin is found to be after 4-8 hrs of its administration in Type-1 diabetic patients.
- In Type-1 diabetic patients, the insulin production is below the required level.
The Method of Consumption of Bitter Gourd by diabetic patients:
- Refrigerate firm and unripe bitter gourd for three to four days.
- Clean them with cold water.Wipe them nicely.
- Make length-wise slices of them removing the seeds.
- Soak them for half an hour in salt water to reduce the bitter flavor.
- Cook it or prepare a juice out of the slices as per preference.
- Consume the bitter gourd with raw honey,carrot or green apple juice.
- Adding raw honey gives a pleasant taste to the juice keeping the glucose level unchanged.
