A natural disaster is a sudden disturbance in nature which causes wide scale destruction. Natural disasters include earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, landslides, floods, fires, etc.
Diabetes patients have difficulty managing their health even in normal times. Imagine their problems during a natural disaster. Here are a few guidelines which can help a diabetes patient take care of himself during a natural disaster.
Precautions for diabetes care before a disaster:
- Always keep your medicines handy. You must be able to take them anywhere anytime without fuss.
- If you know a disaster is coming, make arrangements to leave taking with you food, water, medicines, clothes, etc.
- Always stay calm. Stress not only hampers your mind, but also can cause a rise in blood sugar.
Precautions for diabetes care during the disaster
Diet
- Drink lots of water. Dehydration can be fatal for a diabetic. But make sure the water is clean. Any other non carbohydrate fluids can also be taken.
- Avoid foods with carbohydrates. But don’t go hungry, eat something. Foods containing unsweetened cereals are best.
- Make a meal schedule and stick with it as best as you can.
- Low blood sugar is always a danger. Always carry an instant source of sugar, like candy, with you.
Physical Safety
- Don’t strain yourself too much physically.
- Avoid injuries. Check for any present injuries. Treat them immediately.
- Wear complete clothing, including shoes.
Prepare for medical emergencies
- Try to take with you as many of your medicines with you as possible, preferably in a water proof container.
- Memorize all your medical information like medicines, medical records, surgeries, conditions etc. Better still, write it on paper and carry with you.
- If you are required to take insulin but cannot, do not panic. You can go for a few days without insulin, provided you avoid carbs.
- Tell rescue personnel that you are diabetic. Inform them about your needs.
Other
- Always maintain a positive mental attitude.
- Get plenty of rest.
