Diabetes refers to a condition, when blood sugar in human body remains constantly high. Diabetes occurs when human body could not produce or properly utilizes insulin, a hormone which is responsible for conversion of sugar, starches and other food into energy.
What is Diabetic Travel?
It is always a pleasure for everyone to travel but ‘diabetic travel’ is always a difficult one. ‘Diabetic travel’ is a travel undertaken by a diabetic patient. Such people could take more care before planning and undertaking their journey. There are few tips which could be taken care of in a diabetic travel:
- Plan ahead- Plan before undertaking diabetic travel. This will enable the patient to research about the destination, the food which would be easily available to him, the activities he would be undertaking etc.
- Travelling with Insulin- Whenever a diabetic travel is undertaken make sure that patient carries his Insulin with him in his hand bag or luggage, out of direct sunlight and freezing conditions.
- Visit your doctor- Make sure that before you undertake diabetic travel you have consulted your doctor and made him aware of you journey and the other details. It is important to take his permission before undertaking diabetic travel.
- Take care of your diet- It is very important to take proper care of the diet in diabetic travel. It would be advisable to carry necessary snacks such as crackers, dry fruits, nuts etc. to avoid meals delay or in case of the unavailability.
Safety Tips
Few safety tips which patients should take care of before undertaking diabetic travel are:
- Before boarding a flight the patient can ensure that there enough of the medicines and the diabetic supplies for the entire journey.
- Blood glucose could be monitored frequently for safety in the flight. This could be done after every 4-5 hours.
- Patients can take care that they are well hydrated throughout the journey. Intake of alcohol, caffeine should be avoided while travelling.
- Patients using insulin pumps should carry supplies of long acting and regular insulin or rapid acting insulin along with syringes and extra battery to use in case of pump malfunction or battery failure.
- The patients could take care that they do not miss their meals during the journey. Any delay or missing of the meals could affect the level of glucose in the body.
Diabetic Travel Supplies
Diabetic travel supplies are those items or things which a patient could carry while undertaking a diabetic travel. Patients could prepare a diabetic kit having all important supplies in it which could be carried while travelling. Some of them are mentioned below:
- Glucose meter- It is the most important instrument which the patient have to carry during the journey.
- Extra battery for the meter- An extra battery should always be there so that meter could function smoothly.
- Test Strips- Patients could carry ample of strips so that in case you need to test more times than anticipated you have them in spare.
- Lancing devices and lancets-Patients could carry ample of lancets so that in case of frequent use it should be reused.
- Insulin- It is the must carried material and should be stored in the cool place.
- Syringes – Patients can carry some extra syringes than required for the entire journey.
- Key tone strips- These not used greatly in journey but it would advisable to carry them in the kit.
- Glucagon emergency kit and Fast acting glucose- Both these are necessary to carry in small amount so that in case of emergency they could be used.
