How Gymnema Sylvestre Curbs the Diabetes

The Indian Herb Gymnema Sylvestre is now considered as the potential drug to cure Diabetes.Scientists announced that this herb has anti-diabetic characteristics.This article tries to gain further insight.

Gymnema Sylvestre herb is found in the forests of Central and Southern India.The leaves contain a component called Gymnemic acids.This component is chiefly responsible for the anti-diabetic nature of this herb.The leaves stimulate the beta cells in the pancreas to produce insulin and control the glucose content in blood.Dr.C.R.Maity, Dr.S.K.Chatterjee, Dr.T.Biswas and their group from the Burdwan Medical College, West Bengal, India conducted the research on this herb. The findings of the researchers were reported in the Annual Conference of UK Diabetes Organization in Glasglow in the March 2009.

Prior to this report,a study conducted at the King’s College, London, in 2005 showed similar findings.The water-soluble extract of Gymnema Sylvestre leaves, was administered to experimental diabetic rats.The concentration of these leaves was 0.125 mg per ml of water. It caused increased insulin secretion and beta cells efficiency without any side-effects.
