Diabetic patients complain of dryness of mouth often.The medication used by the diabetic patients is one of the reasons for this complaint.This article tries to understand whether dryness of mouth in a normal person can lead to diabetes or not.
Dryness of mouth is inability of the mouth to produce enough saliva.The functions of Saliva are as follows:
- It protects the mouth from dryness by keeping it moist.
- It prevents the formation of ulcer in our mouth.
- It repairs the agents which can cause cancer in our mouth.
- It restores a neutral PH level of our mouth.
- It prevents the stomach acids from reaching the teeth.
How Dry mouth and diabetes are related ?
- Dry mouth is known to be a symptom for undetected diabetes.
- The latest studies in this subject also suggest that dry mouth can be a potential symptom for diabetes.
- An “Oral Glucose Tolerance Test” was conducted on diabetic and non-diabetic subjects.
- The presence of insulin in their saliva was tested.
- It was found that the salivary insulin secretion pattern was different in both the groups.
- It substantiates the fact that blood sugar level in control can prevent dry mouth.
Precautions to follow after getting detected with diabetes:
- Drink lot of water to keep the mouth moist.Use of moisturizer or lip balm regularly is recommended.
- Stop intake of salty foods,liquids with high sugar content and diet sodas.
- Brush and rinse the mouth immediately after meals.
- Toothpaste meant for dry mouth patients like Biotene can be used.
