Celiac Disease damages the small intestine and make the patient mal-nutritioned.Latest research on this disease link it genetically to Type-1 diabetes. This article tries to gain more insight on this topic.
What is Celiac Disease?
- Gluten is a type of protein required for our body’s nourishment.
- It is absorbed in to the blood stream through very tiny linings called the villi on the small intestine.
- The Body of a patient of this disease cannot tolerate this protein Gluten.
- Presence of gluten in their body triggers a mechanism which destroys the tiny villi.
- As a result the person suffer from mal-nutrition inspite of the intake of healthy diet.
Similarity between Celiac Disease and Type-1 Diabetes:
- Both of them are auto-immune disorders where the body itself starts destroying the vital functioning organs and cells.
- In Celiac Disease the body destroys the tiny Villi linings on the small intestine.
- In Type -1 disease, the body destroys the beta cells in the pancreas responsible for producing insulin.
- Moreover, the organs small intestine ( associated with Celiac disease ) and the Pancreas ( associated with type-1 diabetes ) are closely related in their making and the develop in similar ways.
What Research Studies have to say?
- Researchers at the University of Cambridge and Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, have confirmed that both these diseases have common genetic origin.
- It is because these diseases together shared seven common chromosomes at the genetic level.
- The diseases are also linked because the body reacts similarly to both these diseases.
- It self destructs the organs and cells related to these diseases.
- It confirms why both the diseases simultaneously occur in people.
Prevention is better than cure. But awareness is the best. Now that we know about the genetic link between Celiac disease and Type-1 Diabetes, it should further strengthen our resolve to fight against them.
