According to an estimate 11.5 million or 10.2% of all women aged 20 years or older have diabetes in United States. Though in take of fruits and vegetables is found to be beneficial in controlling diabetes, fruit juices are found to be harmful in case of women suffering from diabetes. This article tries to gain further insight.
Knowledge Gained From Research:
- The study was conducted at the Dept. of Department of Epidemiology, Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, New Orleans, Louisiana.
- It tried to understand the effect of fruits, vegetables and fruit juices on type 2 diabetes.
- The study included 71,346 nurses within the age group of 38-63 years.
- The study was carried out for 18 years with their food habits monitored for every 4 years.
- The study found that intake of green leafy vegetables and fruits lowered the risks of type 2 diabetes. Several other researches on this topic also arrived at the same conclusion.
- A new discovery of this study was the fact that drinking fruit juices increased the risks of diabetes in Women.

What the Result of this Study means: Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants. These are the substances which fight with the free radicals in our body. Free redicals are some harmful substances produced in our body when the air we breathe is filtered by the organ lung. When the presence of the free radicals increase beyond control in our body,a condition called oxidative stress is caused. In a diabetic patient, this condition can lead to serious consequences. In the light of the new research evidence, diabetic patients are restricted to consuming only raw fruits to fight with the effects of oxidative stress.
