Latest research has found that circulation of Sex hormones in the body and the risk of Type 2 Diabetes are inversely related.Low levels of sex hormone – Binding globulin can increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes. This article tries to gain insight on this new revelation.
What is Binding Globulin ?
- It is a Glyco protein.
- It is associated with the major sex hormones Testosterone and Estradiol.
- Its primary function is the circulation of these hormones through the blood stream.
What the research study involved ?
- The findings of the study was published in ” The New England Journal of Medicine”.
- Studies which could relate sex hormones with glucose control are very rare in case of women.
- The present study was aimed at women mainly and involved 359 postmenopausal women newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
- To establish the general relationship between this sex hormone and diabetes,170 men newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes were also included.
- The presence of Binding Globulin was measured in them.
What were the results of this study?
- In women the level of this hormone was found to be 0.28.
- In men the level of this hormone was found to be 0.29.
- This study found out that lower levels of this hormone in women can rise the risk of type 2 diabetes in them.
- It clearly suggests that Binding Globulin and risk of risk of Type 2 Diabetes are related.
- It was also found that higher levels of this hormone results in low body mass index and low probability of hyper tension.
Though the relationship between Binding Globulin and Type 2 diabetes is clearly established, scientists are uncertain about the ability of this sex hormone to predict the development of diabetes in prior.
