What is Diabetes ?

The food during the process of digestion get converted in to glucose.The glucose reaches various organs of our body through the blood stream providing energy to the body for all its metabolic activities.The organ pancreas releases the hormone insulin which regulates the presence of glucose in our body.It converts glucose into energy or stores it for later use. When our pancreas can’t produce enough insulin , the amount of glucose rises in our body causing a condition medically called diabetes mellitus.

Indian Blackbaerry’s benefits to diabetic patients:

• A scientist by name Mercier found that the liquid extracts from the seeds of this fruit reduced the blood sugar level in dogs, way back in 1940.

• An experiment to find its effect on the humans was conducted at the Central Drug Research Institute,Lucknow,India.

• The dried alcoholic extract of the blackberry seeds was given to the diabetic patients orally.

• It was found that the blood sugar level reduced.

• Scientists are of the opinion that the seeds of this fruit contain an alkaloid called jambosine, and a glycoside called antimellin.

• Jambosine and antimellin stop the conversion of starch in to sugar.

• The seed also reduces the blood pressure by 34.6% because it contains the ellagic acid.

• The seed’s other constituents are :

Calcium 0.41%; Protein 6.3-8.5%;

Phosphorus 0.17%; Starch 41%;

Tannin 6-19%; Crude fiber 16.9%;

Dextrin 6.1%; Ash 21.72%;

Fat 1.18%; Fatty acids;

And a trace of Phytosterol;
