Diabetic Shock

Diabetic shock is a condition which occurs due to severe hypoglycemia. When people suffer from hypoglycemia, they have very low levels of blood sugar. If these glucose are significantly low, the person can have the threat of going into shock. This condition occurs when the blood sugar levels are lower than 50 mg/dL. This might be the dangerous condition as the individual may become unconscious partially or completely. Immediate medical attention is required if any person shows diabetic shock symptoms.

Symptoms of Diabetic Shock:

Following are the symptoms of diabetic shock:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Irritability
  • Increased hunger
  • Pallor: Skin becomes pale
  • Deep and rapid heart rate
  • Loss of coordination
  • Sweating
  • Dizziness
  • Hyperactive behavior
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty in concentrating
  • Headaches

Causes of Diabetic Shock:

Possible causes of diabetes include:

  • Increase in daily activities
  • Low intake of carbohydrates
  • Drinking alcohol without eating
  • Error or increase in insulin doses
  • Missed or late meals

Treatment for Diabetic Shock:

Raising blood sugar levels in diabetic shock patients should be accompanied as fast as possible. It is easy to treat diabetic shock if mild symptoms are observed. In such cases, improvement in the patient is observed in 10 -15 minutes.

For a person with diabetic shock, sugar should not be given directly because sugar is not absorbed by stomach and it has to be digested.

Moderate to severe signs and symptoms can be treated with absorb able sugar wafers or glucose tablets. Solids or liquids should not be given an unconscious person because this may make him choke and vomit. Honey or frosting can be spread on the inner sides of the cheeks if the person is unconscious. This helps the patient to wake up and makes him to eat or drink.

For severe symptoms like seizures or prolonged unconsciousness, Glucagon, an injectable hormone can be given while waiting for the medical professional.
