What are the Symptoms And Effects of Diabetes?

Diabetes affects the body’s ability to produce or respond to insulin. Insulin is the hormone that allows blood sugar to enter the cells of the body and produce energy. When diabetes occurs, excessive glucose stays in the blood, resulting in raised blood glucose (hyperglycemia) levels, leading to spillage of glucose into the urine. Due to this condition of elevated blood glucose levels, problems may occur in the body cells. The high blood sugar levels can damage the nerves, eyes, kidneys, heart and blood vessels. Scientific studies in recent times indicate that male diabetic patients record erectile dysfunction, and thus medical experts usually recommend that men with unexplained erectile dysfunction go for diabetes-screening, with a fasting blood glucose test.

High Blood Sugar- The Chief Symptom of Diabetes
Normal blood sugar range spans 65 -14 mg/dl (milligrams of glucose per 100 milliliters of blood), a high blood sugar range would feature 250-350 in the patient, while over 350 would be termed as very high blood sugar.

Other Symptoms of Diabetes
Common symptoms of diabetes include excessive thirst, urination, infections (thrush), extreme hunger, unexplained weight loss, extreme fatigue, irritability and feelings of nausea/vomiting with breath that has turned sweet smelling.

Types of Diabetes: Symptoms and Effects
There are four main types of diabetes, mainly Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM), Non Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM), Gestational Diabetes and Secondary Diabetes. The most torturous is the Secondary diabetes mellitus, in which elevated blood sugar levels develop due to another medical condition. It may also occur when the pancreatic tissue, responsible for creating insulin is destroyed by disease, trauma or surgical removal of the pancreas. Diabetes can also result from hormonal disturbances, such as excessive growth hormone production.

Effects of These Symptoms:
Complications of high blood sugar - heart, nerve and kidney disease, stroke, blindness and impotence - can be fatal, but these conditions can be greatly minimized by maintaining blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible. For people who are over-weight, inactive, or having high triglyceride and low HDL levels, mothers having given birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds or those with gestational diabetes, diabetes is a strong possibility. Other groups at risk are Latinos, African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans or Pacific Islanders, with a family history of diabetes/symptoms of diabetes.

Cure for Diabetic Symptoms and Effects
The best cure is early detection and treatment for diabetes/ high blood sugar, which can help prevent the onset or complications of diabetes. Disciplined measures can help maintain blood glucose levels, blood fat levels and weight. Following a balanced diet designed by a doctor, adequate exercise, eating at regular intervals etc can help deal with the majority of symptoms and effects of diabetes.
